This one was fun to do in watercolor. Just thinking about the meditations, thoughts, and ideas that are in our minds that no one can see. Just thought I'd put mine in a painting. I love words in paintings and have not begun to plumb the possibilities of including words in my work. I was thinking the other day of the faith it takes to feel certain that there is a heaven, when the thought came to me that there are many worlds we cannot see and yet we know that they are there - for instance the 'world' in each of our minds. Secret worlds for the most part except for what we choose to share.

Sing For Joy - Sold

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 315px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3GXfTYYn9Pc/TZfIc-CX_cI/AAAAAAAAAGI/_lr_nL_Dggo/s320/Singing%2BBird%2BSOLD%2B%25282%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591157862418611650" />
The image of a singing bird has always been meaningful to me. I'm not sure even that
I can put it into words. However here I have tried to say it with paint! This is the first of a series of bird paintings. I'm striving to be "painterly" and paint in an impressionistic way, using a "lost and found" approach and minimal strokes. This was so much fun to paint that I didn't follow through with that very well, but I'm happy with it anyway.

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Edgar A. My empasis is on soft edges. I am pleased with the effect this gives to the painting. I believe that lost and found edges lend a slight emotional feeling to a painting, perhaps this is a subliminal bit of mystery? Edgar Whitney (wbo I studied with many times) would have said it is part of the 'entertainment' in the painting - (never go far without changing something - an edge, a value, a color,a texture). His well known saying: "We are not 'artists', we are entertainers!"

'Pansies'

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 318px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZYQCYeG2d3o/S-7blheM2rI/AAAAAAAAAFY/PzaI8RMWCjA/s320/Pansies+for+Blog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471552034988415666" />
Here's a little (6" x 6") oil painting - just for fun! I loved the combination of media and the vivid colors. It also satisfied something in me that wants to express the subject without being realistic. To me that is really what art should be. I love to feed the gulls when I am at the beach. I know, it makes the beach residents mad at you, but then, I'm not there very often so I figure they'll just have to put up with me. I love it when you feed one gull, and then it tells all the other gulls and suddenly you can see them flying in all the way from the horizon, until they are hovering in a cloud around your head. Then they remain suspended in front of you until you toss a morsel to them. Anyway, I think I caught that suspended sense of feeding frenzy in this painting!

Mountain River

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: undefinedpx; height: undefinedpx;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZYQCYeG2d3o/ShPp5TAz4iI/AAAAAAAAAFA/whWOu1J8OgU/s320/Mountain+River.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337867153929658914" />
This is the river I visit every year to paint. It is the Greenbriar Branch of the Little Pigeon River in Tennessee. A group of 15 or so painters gather each year to spend a week painting the beauty of the mountains. We stay at the Buckhorn Inn outside of Gatlinburg. The inn is located on a mountain side away from all city noise and distractions. It is an idyllic week. This spot on the river is a favorite place to paint because you can set up your easel on the flat rocks in the middle of the river and paint with the sound of the water rushing down the mountain all around you. I hope I have conveyed some measure of the beauty of this place to you. This is an oil painting, size 8" x 10".

"Sunflower Morning" SOLD

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: undefinedpx; height: undefinedpx;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZYQCYeG2d3o/SaBIm5qbAaI/AAAAAAAAAEo/ktzE66wr36A/s320/*Sunflower+for+blog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5305320194193424802" />
This is a favorite painting of mine. The reason that I like it is that I feel that any painting should have 'lost and found' edges and I feel that I succeeded with that in this painting. 'Lost and found edges' help to entertain the viewer and escape the boredom of 'sameness'. I think they also add an emotional edge or feeling to a painting. Here I think they tell of light and air and movement. One of our class, Susan, who is as fine a gardner as she is a painter, brought in a beautiful bouquet of oriental poppies. Looking for the 'essence' or 'symbol' for the poppy, I tried to reproduce the crinkled petals by placing tissue paper onto the moist paint and letting it dry there. It gave a wonderful texture to the poppy petals and accomplished it's purpose. The other symbols, the drooping flower, the black center, also serve to tell the viewer - 'this is an oriental poppy'.

A Rose is a Rose

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZYQCYeG2d3o/RkPDIyid1MI/AAAAAAAAAAM/UYSEbxlvvDo/s320/ABSTRACT+ROSE.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5063104961867273410" />
This is a small painting.
